Orienting New Talent for Film & Television through eLearning
Designing this eLearning orientation felt like creating a hug. This was an offering not just of skills, but of self-confidence, cultural fluency, and industry nourishment for aspiring film professionals who rarely get this kind of tailored support.
About the Project: eLearning Orientation
In Spring 2024, I designed an eLearning orientation to pair with a two-day, in-person workshop to support new graduates and theatre professionals preparing to enter film and television production, specifically in the costuming department. The project responded to a critical gap: many non-major production states lack trained, ready-to-work crew. This results in overburdened teams and lost opportunities for locals.
This workshop was created in collaboration with a subject matter expert (SME) who has decades of hands-on experience in costuming for film. It was intentionally built to nourish the knowledge, soft skills, and inner confidence of new and saged professionals alike who often feel unprepared or unseen when they land on set.
Instructional Approach
I led the full instructional design, from learner and contextual analysis to design strategy and assessment mapping. Below you can see a tight screenshot of the initial map for the eLearning Orientation to provide some context as well as the link for the original planning document.
This workshop would emphasize:
- Learner empowerment through soft-skills development
- Cultural and professional fluency via set etiquette, protocols, and vocabulary
- Confidence-building through scaffolded learning and practical tools
- Equity in access for creatives outside of major hubs like LA or NY
The online orientation (built in Articulate 360) allowed students to explore costuming basics at their own pace. This ensured all learners arrived with shared vocabulary and could engage fully in active, hands-on sessions during the two-day workshop.

Why It Matters: Reflecting on Nourishment in eLearning Orientation
In designing this experience, I was reminded again that career readiness isn’t just about skills, it’s about belonging.
So many students outside of traditional production hotspots face a steep learning curve. This eLearning orientation and workshop support was an inspiring for me to level that curve and share the message: You deserve to feel prepared. You deserve to be here. This is learning that nourishes the whole person, not just the resume.
